EMPLOYMENT AT BARRETT SHEARING

Barrett Shearing employs up to 50 full-time staff during our peak season. We employ staff who are professional and have good work ethics. Before employment, all staff are required to complete “Terms of Conditions & Employment” agreement. This agreement has been approved by the Shearing Contractors Association of Australia (SCAA) and outlines our expectations of our employees.

Terms and Conditions of Employment

Wages

- Employees are paid in align with the Pastoral Award 2010

- Employees will be paid on Monday by 5.00pm (following Monday after start date).

- Pay slips will be sent to employees via email.

- Employees will be employed on a day to day basis

- Employee authorises for contractor to deduct wage advances, shearing supplies from wages, mess etc.

- WAGES WILL NOT BE PROCESSED until ALL information has been provided. Please ensure your details are CORRECT.

- Income statements (group certificates) can be accessed via the MyGov app.

- As of the 1st July 2026, your superannuation contribution will be paid each pay cycle. Payday super contributions will be mandatory for all businesses.

Injuries or Accidents

- Employees are responsible to report all accidents/injuries to the wool classer & the contractor immediately. You will need to complete an incident report (provided in the team kit) and forward to the contractor/ admin

- Employees who are required to take time off due to workplace injuries will be compensated under the relevant NSW legislation.

- If employees believe a situation constitutes a hazard, report immediately to the wool classer who will then report to the contractor. A hazard report will also need to be completed.

Code of Conduct

Barrett Shearing Pty Ltd commits to encouraging a safe, supportive and productive work environment. We align our policies and practices with the Work Health and Safety Act of each state in which we operate. This can only happen when everyone cooperates and agrees to suitable standards of conduct and work practices.

The following conditions need to be adhered to whilst you are employed at our company. Failure to do so may result in disciplinary action which could include reprimand, warning, suspension or dismissal

Professional Conduct

- AT NO TIMES are employees to display AGGRESSIVE OR DISRESPECTFUL BEHAVIOUR towards the farmer, contractor or other employees! This behaviour may result in disciplinary action.

- Please consider your interactions with fellow staff members. BULLYING, consistent IRRITABLE and MOODY behaviour and GOSSIPING is discouraged and may result in disciplinary action.

- Derogatory and defaming comments verbally or online including social media regarding to the company, contractor or other employees will not be tolerated.

- SEXUAL HARRASSMENT OR INTIMIDATORY BEHAVIOUR is not tolerated and may result in disciplinary action

Workmanship

- All employees are to conduct themselves in a professional manner.

- Workmanship should be of a professional standard that should exceed the minimum standards as outline by AWEX Code of Practice or as instructed by the contractor/team leader.

- ALL EMPLOYEES ARE EXPECTED TO PERFORM THEIR JOB TO THE BEST OF THEIR ABILITY.

- We expect employees to always take PRIDE in their work.

Drugs & Alcohol

- Employees MUST NOT CONSUME OR BE UNDER THE INFLUENCE of alcohol or non-prescription drugs whilst on the job, traveling to or from the work site or when living in ‘camp-out’ situations.

- Employees must not be ‘hung-over’ when they present themselves to work each day. Non-prescription drugs are not to be bought into workplaces (shearing sheds or huts).

- On ‘camp-out’ jobs, responsible consumption of alcohol is accepted after 5.30pm.

Smoking

- NO SMOKING in the workplace or VEHICLES. If you are a smoker, you are required to smoke outside of the workplace (shed).

- This is the law in NSW.

- Please check with the team leader as to where the designated smoking areas are.

- Cigarette butts are to be extinguished properly and disposed of in an appropriate rubbish bin, being mindful of fire hazards.

- Smoking is NOT permitted during work hours (runs)

Animal Welfare

- Mistreatment of animals WILL NOT be tolerated. Employees will be dismissed IMMEDIATELY.

- Sheep & dogs are to be treated humanely and with respect.

- Where available, the application of an appropriate pain relief product, anaesthetic or chemical, needs to be applied to sheep prior to stitching.

Equipment

Shearing equipment must be in excellent working order. Safety clutches must be maintained and checked on a regular basis where ‘anti-lock’ shearing gear is not provided.

Vehicles

- Vehicles owned by Barrett Shearing are for travel TO and FROM WORK ONLY.

- ALL RUBBISH is to be disposed of in bins and not left in the vehicles.

- UNAUTHORISED use of vehicles and fuel cards may result in termination of employment.

Curfew

Whilst on camp outs or staying at the shearing quarter’s, a 10pm CURFEW.

- This curfew considers the rights of all employees to have a restful and peaceful environment.

Visitors:

- VISITORS to shearing sheds, huts, hotel/motel rooms and cabins at the quarters is NOT PERMITTED.

- This INCLUDES EMPLOYEES not working that day, FAMILY MEMBERS, FRIENDS & CHILDREN.

- This is a work environment and should be considered as such.

Appropriate Clothing

- Employees are required to wear suitable protective clothing as per industry standards (e.g. closed footwear). Thongs, flip flops or crocs etc and/or ripped clothing ARE NOT permitted.

- Under no circumstances are you permitted to take of your shoes while working

Weapons or domestic animals

- No WEAPONS or DOMESTIC ANIMALS are to be bought on to the property without consent of the contractor.

Working dogs

- If working dogs are required, please ensure that they are always tied up when not actively working.

- Animals should have access to shade and water.

Parking

- Please consider parking whilst at the shearing shed or living quarters.

- Vehicles need to be parked a reasonable distance from shearing shed and huts to allow easy access of people/emergency services (if required) and movement of stock.

Cut–Out:

On cut out days, wool-handlers are responsible to assist the presser at the end of the day if assistance is required.

Requesting Leave:

If you require a day off, please give adequate notice so that a replacement can be found.
